Save Mt Lofty Inc. have conducted thermal drone surveys for landholders as part of the 'Toowoomba Region Koala Habitat Project'. On average, we have observed an impressive average of about 2 koalas per each night time survey. We reported to landholders following each survey to inform as to future planting decisions in the light of identified populations and existing habitat corridors. A world carved through time—by ocean and wind, by the endless rhythm of freezing and thawing, light and darkness. Here, survival is etched into the jagged cliffs and shifting ice, as unforgiving as the lives that cling to it. For penguins, hunger presses against the edge of safety. Predators prowl the ice’s edge, waiting. Parents face an impossible choice: abandon their chick or perish beside it. Half-molted and unready, some young are left to fend for themselves—too soon, too vulnerable. But in this harsh and unforgiving landscape, there is a quite and powerful beauty. Care4esK is a Conservation Awareness group of volunteers, undertaking research, rescues, transfers and releases of our Endangered Koalas across many parts of the Somerset Region in South-east Queensland. During our recently completed 2-year KHaRES Project, we collected crucial Koala data for analysis, whilst rehabilitating their corridors, and planting over 500 Koala Food Trees in 5 locations around our local township of Esk. Care4esK members also conduct property surveys, identifying rare Flora species, and discovering Endangered and Threatened Fauna species. These surveys have confirmed the presence of Greater Gliders in the Esk National Park, Brush-tailed Rock Wallabies at Mount Glen Rock, and Powerful Owls on Coal Creek. Much of our ongoing work is attending to sick or injured Koalas, after receiving calls or messages from the public. Our rescues are undertaken day and night. Once rescued, the Koalas are transferred to the nearest Wildlife Hospital, with all costs being covered by Care4esK members. We work in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast, the University of Southern Queensland, and liaise with multiple conservation groups, including Wildlife Queensland and Friends of Parks Queensland. The Somerset Region is home to 3 First Nations language groups. The Dungibara, the Jagera and the Jinibara people. This project is a joint collaboration between local communities and conservation groups like Great Eastern Ranges. Funding support from International Fund for Animal Welfare enabled GER to partner with Lockyer Uplands Catchments Inc. who are leading a series of on ground activities through the corridor running from the Bunya Mountains to the Border Ranges. ​ The B2B corridor is a critical migration route for a whole range of species that move north and south, but also east to west in accordance with the seasons. The area is also important for locally resident species like koala, that need to move around the landscape to locate resources. With pressures from wild fire, predators, climate change and other threats, this project aims to restore habitat and build the resilience of native species to adapt and persist for future generations. ​ Local people are working together to plant trees, install nest boxes, learn about the environment, and more, but also get the opportunity to contribute to a much bigger conservation effort.
